What Happened This Week

Gas fell 6.3% to 74.75p and power dropped 7.5% to £69.73 this week. That's gas down 2.4% and power down 4.2% compared to last Friday. The drop came from milder weather forecasts and progress in US-Iran talks, but temperatures are set to turn much colder from next week.

The Full Story

Energy prices had a proper tumble this week, with gas down 6.3% and power falling 7.5%. The big driver was weather forecasters backing down from their cold predictions, which meant less heating demand. Progress in those US-Iran nuclear talks also helped calm nerves about supply disruptions. But it wasn't all one-way traffic. Prices bounced around quite a bit as forecasters kept changing their minds about the weather. The UK's been getting loads of wind power lately, which is great for keeping electricity prices down. However, there's talk of a proper cold snap arriving from 16 February, with German temperatures potentially dropping 10 degrees below normal. Compared to last week's close, we're still down 2-4% across the board. The market's clearly relieved about the milder weather, but those cold forecasts are stopping prices from falling further.
