P432: Navigating New Changes in Electricity Metering for UK Businesses

Business energy management concept showing advanced metering infrastructure and a professional analyzing data, signifying proactive adaptation to P432 changes in energy metering

P432 Explained: A Shift in Electricity Metering for UK Businesses

P432 represents a move to ensure all Current Transformer (CT) Advanced meters are treated as Half Hourly (HH) for settlement and billing. If your business currently has Non-Half Hourly (NHH) CT meters, you'll need to update them by March 2026 to comply with this new standard.

Understanding the P432 Change

P432 represents a move to ensure all Current Transformer (CT) Advanced meters are treated as Half Hourly (HH) for settlement and billing. If your business currently has Non-Half Hourly (NHH) CT meters, you'll need to update them by March 2026 to comply with this new standard.

The Impetus Behind P432

This change aims to mitigate risks associated with the transition to Market-wide Half Hourly Settlement (MHHS) and ensure that all meters are settled accurately and efficiently. P432 comes after the P272 change in 2017, which we at The Smart Energy Company navigated successfully for our customers.

The Timeline for P432 Compliance

  • April 1, 2024: All new CT connections must be HH settled.

  • April 15, 2024: P432 officially begins for all NHH CT meters.

  • March 2026: Deadline for all NHH CT meters to change to HH.

Identifying and Adapting to P432

We’ll use the data from your meter operator to identify if your meter is a NHH CT meter. If any information is missing or unclear, we're prepared to investigate thoroughly.

Potential Meter Exchanges

Most meters won’t need to be exchanged but can be reconfigured remotely to collect HH data. Our experienced team will evaluate your meters and provide bespoke advice.

"What P432 Means for Your Business: A Closer Look at Costs and Consumption"

With the new P432 regulation taking effect, it's crucial for businesses to grasp how this change will directly influence their energy usage and costs. P432's shift to Half Hourly (HH) metering for Current Transformer (CT) meters means that energy usage will now be tracked in 30-minute intervals. This granular view provides a valuable opportunity for businesses to analyse and optimize their energy consumption patterns.

Detailed Usage Insights

The move to HH metering will allow your business to pinpoint times of high energy usage. With these insights, there's potential to redistribute energy-intensive activities to periods when unit rates are lower, such as night-time, which can lead to cost savings.

Understanding the Costs

While HH metering comes with benefits, it's important to note that CT HH Meters typically incur higher standing charges. These can include additional costs like capacity charges, calculated as pence per day per kVA. As a result of P432, some businesses, particularly those with lower energy usage (under 50,000 kWh), may witness significant increases in their energy bills due to regulatory changes, with standing charges rising by as much as £10 per day.

Weighing the Impact

For a small business, this hike in standing charges, despite minimal energy consumption, could lead to a disproportionately higher energy bill. This regulatory change underscores the need for businesses to review their energy strategies and consider potential efficiency improvements or adjustments to their energy consumption schedules.

At The Smart Energy Company, we understand that adapting to these changes can be a complex process. We're committed to helping our clients navigate these transitions, offering bespoke advice to manage costs effectively while complying with new regulations.
