Not sure about the type of meter your business needs? Our expert team is here to guide you. Below, we break down the essential information you need to know about your gas, electricity, and water meters, ensuring you make the right choice for your business

What is a Gas Meter?

A gas meter is a crucial device that measures the volume of natural gas consumed by your business. Ensuring you have the right size gas meter is essential for efficient energy management and cost control. Using an incorrectly sized meter could lead to higher standing charges, which is an unnecessary expense for your business. The type of gas meter you require depends on your business's Hourly Load (HL) – the peak amount of gas your operations demand at any given time. This HL is determined by the specific gas-powered equipment and appliances in use at your site. Each device requires a certain amount of gas to function properly.

Examples of typical appliances and their gas consumption:

  • Gas fire: 10 kWh

  • Gas cooker: 20 kWh

  • Gas boiler: 30 kWh

For example, if your business uses these three appliances simultaneously, the combined Hourly Load would be 60 kWh. To support this, you would need a gas meter capable of delivering sufficient gas flow to meet a 60 kWh demand.

At The Smart Energy Company, we ensure that your business is equipped with the right gas meter size to meet your needs efficiently. Our expert team can assess your gas requirements, recommend the appropriate meter, and handle the installation process seamlessly.

Type of Gas Meters

Gas meters come in various types, each suited to different business needs. Choosing the right meter type ensures accurate measurement and cost efficiency. Here are the most common types of gas meters used in businesses:

  • Diaphragm Meters: The most commonly used meter in smaller businesses. They work well for consistent, low-to-moderate gas usage.

  • Rotary Displacement Meters: Ideal for businesses with variable gas usage. These meters are versatile and handle different levels of gas flow effectively.

  • Turbine Meters: Best for businesses that require a constant and high gas flow. These meters are typically used in larger industrial settings where continuous gas supply is critical.

Meter Terminology

Understanding key gas meter terminology helps you manage your business’s energy needs more effectively. Below are some essential terms you should know:

  • Emergency Control Valve (ECV): A critical safety mechanism located on the gas supply pipe, the ECV controls the flow of gas and can shut off the supply in an emergency. It’s typically found where the pipe meets the gas meter.

  • Regulator/Governor: This device ensures that the gas pressure is maintained at a consistent level, delivering the correct amount of gas to your appliances. It also has the ability to cut off the gas flow if the pressure exceeds a safe level.

  • Anaconda/Flexi-Hose: A flexible, metallic hose that connects the gas regulator to the gas pipes. It’s designed to allow safe and efficient gas flow management, accommodating movement and ensuring secure connections.

  • Meter Pressure: The pressure measured by your gas meter, typically between 19 and 21 mbar. If the pressure falls outside this range, and elevated pressure hasn't been requested, you should contact your supplier or, in emergencies, the Gas Emergency Line on 0800 111 999.

  • Meter Point Reference Number (MPRN): A unique identification number assigned to your gas supply. Found on your gas bill, the MPRN is required when switching suppliers or making service changes.

Knowing Your Gas Meter Size

Selecting the correct gas meter size is essential for ensuring your business operates efficiently without incurring unnecessary costs. Here’s a guide to standard gas meter sizes and their applications:

  • U6: Max Hourly Load: 64 kWh – Suitable for small businesses with moderate gas usage.

  • U16: Max Hourly Load: 173 kWh – Ideal for businesses with higher gas demands.

  • U40: Max Hourly Load: 433 kWh – Typically used in medium-sized businesses with significant gas needs.

  • U100: Max Hourly Load: 1083 kWh – Best for large industrial sites with very high gas consumption.

The ‘U’ designation indicates the meter's capacity in Standard Cubic Metres per Hour (SCMH). For example, a U6 meter can handle 6 cubic metres per hour. If you're unsure which meter size is right for your business, our expert team is here to help you make the best choice.

What Does a Meter Asset Manager Do?

A Meter Asset Manager (MAM) is a specialist who manages your gas meters on behalf of your supplier. Their responsibilities ensure that your gas meters are correctly installed, maintained, and safe to use. Here’s what a MAM typically handles:

  • Meter Installation and Maintenance: MAMs oversee the installation of new meters and ensure they continue to function correctly through regular maintenance.

  • Bespoke Meter Design: For businesses with unique energy needs, MAMs design and build custom meters that fit specific requirements.

  • Meter Removal and Disposal: When a gas meter is no longer needed, the MAM ensures it is safely removed and disposed of, following all relevant safety protocols.

  • Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) Devices: MAMs install AMR devices, which automatically monitor and report your gas usage, helping you manage energy consumption more efficiently.

What Clients Say

Rated 5 Stars by 100% of Clients

"I've worked with a lot of energy brokers and unfailingly they just want a quick transaction after a 5 minute call. The Smart Energy Company sent us weekly pricing and shared sector insights for several months before we signed paper. How could we use anyone else. Also they found the best pricing. We did check."
